TITLE On the Adler-Shiota-van Moerbeke formula

ABSTRACT In this talk I will introduce the works by Adler, Shiota, and van Moerbeke for solving the p-reduced KP hierarchy (or generalized KdV hierarchy) constrained by the string equation. We shall see that the Adler-Shiota-van Moerbeke (ASvM) formula is a relationship connecting vertex operators and additional symmetries of the KP hierarchy, and implies that the solution space of the string equation can be characterized by a set of W-constraints. Extension to other cases will be discussed.
