TITLE On a bit of history of classfield theory

ABSTRACT In this talk I would like to introduce classfield to students by telling the history. Classfiled theory by now is a large subject and it would not be possible to give a full history and that's why I said " a bit of " history. I said to "introduce" classfiled theory I mean to explain what are some of the main theorems and how to understand them, in particular I am NOT going to give any proofs.
Within this framework I still have a large number of choices - I think I would begin with the rational numbers and then to function field over finite fields. So we shall see.
Now where do I start? May be I shall start with some Galois groups - so if you are a student you may want to remind yourself the theory of polynomials, field extensions,...
